Infrared Signature Engineer

Job # 2023

Existing DoD security clearance is mandatory.  Remember, the Applicant selected will be subject to a security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information

  • Performing Infrared analysis of fixed and rotary wing aircraft, missiles, and marine craft and associated propulsion systems (airframes and exhaust plumes) with IR Image, SIMIR, Vulcan, or Atlantic City. Infrared testing of above exhaust systems utilizing Indigo Phoenix mid-wave camera and RDAS or TRIE systems (Rtools, Thermagram, and IR Vista) in both flight test environments and labs. Aerodynamic testing using non-traditional methods utilizing IR cameras. Calibration of Indigo and Inframetrics IR cameras using black bodies.
  • You must currently be involved with performing Infrared signature analysis of hot parts and plume of aircraft exhaust systems.
  • Must be able to design IR exhaust components for analysis as well as test. Analysis of design requirements, evaluation of technical tool requirements, interaction with engine component groups and project disciplines, development of standard procedure, and both technical and customer documentation.
  • Bachelors or Masters of Science in an engineering / technical discipline from an accredited college in a related discipline, or a Ph.D. and equivalent experience/combined education, with 5 or more years related experience. IR analysis, heat transfer, internal aerodynamics, and a current Top Secret clearance.
  • You will also be involved with code writing of infrared signature algorithms (including Monte Carlo method) using a variety of programming languages included C/C++, Visual Basic, Excel/VBA, Unix scripts, and Perl. Design of low Observables IR exhaust systems for above platforms.
  • Geometry manipulation of low observable using Unigraphics, CAD, Gridgen, Lockheed ACAD, AutoCAD, or Boeing Mr Patches software for use in analytical code. Plume CFD analysis.
  • Convective heat transfer analysis using existing FORTRAN code and other available tools.

Infrared Signature Analyst / Design Engineer

IR signature analysis and design related to aircraft exhaust systems. 

M.S. or Ph.D. degree in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering.  

  • Strong background in heat transfer, in particular, radiative and convective heat transfer. 

  • Background in compressible flow.

  • Develop suppression systems for advanced military fighters and transports, effectively using both empirical and historical results, when available, to guide design. 

  • Create computational grids, and post-process results using proprietary and/or other standard analytical tools. 

  • Work may include application of commercial CFD codes. 

  • Participate in lab-based and full-scale engine testing activities to validate predictions or otherwise assist in Infrared suppresser design.

2-10 yrs of experience with thermal and/or IR design activity, preferably involving Monte-Carlo code application. 

  • Preference given to those with practical suppression design experience.  CAD-related capability (Unigraphics or CATIA preferred). 

  • Ability to program in FORTRAN and/or C++ a plus. 

  • Familiarity with IR-related testing, with demonstrated ability to link empirical results with analysis. 

  • Active DoD SECRET clearance at a minimum, with active SAR clearance preferred.  Must be able to get a TS clearance. 

  • Candidates with peer-reviewed publications and/or multiple conference presentations desired. 

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills required, with Microsoft Office (specifically, PowerPoint) familiarity.

Principal Infrared Systems Engineer

* Must have extensive experience with infrared focal plane arrays, cryogenic readout operation, semiconductor physics, test and integration and Electro-optical imaging systems. Perform Electro-optical systems performance calculations (MRTD, MTF, NEDT, etc.), system trades and requirements

* Flowdown and allocation.

* Coordinate and facilitate systems engineering functions for numerous programs.

* Performs technical planning, system integration, verification and validation, cost and risk, and supportability and effectiveness analyses for total systems.

* Assess risk and optimal approaches for complex infrared systems including staring, scanning designs with the use of TDI and A/D conversion. 

* Requires the ability to function as a customer interface.  

* Analyses are performed at all levels of total system product to include: concept, design, fabrication, test and disposal.

* Ensures the logical and systematic conversion of customer or product requirements into total systems solutions that acknowledge technical, schedule, and cost constraints. Performs functional analysis, timeline analysis, detail trade studies, requirements allocation and interface definition studies to translate customer requirements into hardware and software specifications.

MS in EE, Physics or Computer Science desired.

Bachelors degree from an accredited college in a related discipline, or equivalent experience/combined education, with 9 years of professional experience; or 7 years of professional experience with a related Masters degree; or 4 years of professional experience required with a related Ph.D.

The candidate would be involved with signature predictions and using signature data to support/validate those predictions.  

We are in need of a Senior Research Engineer  to perform Infrared signature analysis and design related to aircraft exhaust systems, using Monte-Carlo codes.   Create computational grids, and post-process results using ours and/or other standard analytical tools.  Work will likely include application of commercial CFD codes.  Participation in testing activity to validate predictions or otherwise assist in IR suppresser design.

We will require an active DoD SECRET clearance at a minimum, with active SAR (special access) clearance preferred.

3-5 yrs minimum experience with Monte-Carlo code calculations.  Preference given to those with aircraft exhaust-system suppression design experience.  CAD-related capability (Unigraphics or CATIA preferred). 

Ability to program in FORTRAN and/or C++ a plus.  Familiarity with IR-related testing, with demonstrated ability to link empirical radiometric results with IR analysis.  Must be able to get a TS clearance. 

Candidates with peer-reviewed publications and/or multiple conference presentations desired.  Excellent written and verbal communication skills required, with Microsoft Office (specifically, PowerPoint) familiarity. 

Ability to travel 3-5 times/yr within U.S. 

A Masters or Ph.D. degree in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering is required, coupled with a strong background in heat transfer, in particular, radiative and convective heat transfer.  

Background in compressible flow.

Strongest consideration will be given to those candidates with demonstrated ability to (a) work with teams, in a classified environment; (b) use first-order estimates to guide detailed design; (c) work within budget and schedule constraints; (d) develop novel approaches to solve difficult problems; (e) multi-task, and (f) develop effective data-based arguments to support technical conclusions and recommendations.  The successful candidate will have flexible work hours for the infrequent times this is required.
